It's barebones but it works and the people are lovely.

When I got to the hotel, it actually said it was CLOSED and I had to complete check in at a hotel down the street (despite already having a bunch of luggage to carry around). Was very strange. Breakfast was also at the other hotel (although it was actually very good). Elevator is a super old vintage one with two doors and there is also a cat in residence (I do like cats, but would've liked to know in advance since my dog went a bit crazy). The photos on the walls are also old and it gave me a bit of a Haunted Mansion vibe. Luckily no ghosts.

Wasn't clear enough in the listing that it was a shared bathroom.

Skittles the cat is friendly. The owners have preserved the original victorian charm of the place. Classic San Francisco. The windows open for some fresh sea air. big old clawfoot tub and shower. Be sure and observe the dog, cat, bird and mouse in the wonderful antique elevator. And take the stairs at least once to see all the great old photos. Close to some good restaurants (Bouche and Roxanne's for instance). Two steep blocks uphill to The Masonic. Parking right across the street. We have stayed previously at the Fairmont and Mark Hopkins and we now prefer this place. Real old San Francisco feel. Nothing not to like.

The Golden Gate Hotel is a cozy little place in a great location. We live in a Victorian house, so this felt just like home. The elevator is too cool and we enjoyed all the vintage pictures. The rooms were very clean and the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. We would love to visit again someday. Decaf options would have been nice.

No air circulation, small room.

I know there is a cat in the hotel but the smell of cat urine is quite strong. The room was clean, although TV and some plus sockets were not working. Bed and shower were very good. I preferred staying at the Cornell Hotel 2 minutes down the road!

Didn’t have time to try it for our stay.

Loved the location. Right next to the Masonic. We arrived during a storm and the lobby was locked. We had to walk to another hotel to check in. We had a toddler with us so it was a bit stressful. Our lights also kept turning on in the middle of the night. It also sounded like someone was outside our fire escape one night.

Cute little hotel right in the city. Old style elevator and fire escapes and everything wonderful. I got in late, but check-in was easy, just a few steps down the street to another hotel where I received my key. This place is so well decorated and full of charm! Great place for me and my dog.

The breakfast is in the partner hotel, Cornell (2 min walking). It’s not bad, just different. Also the packages bought had to be delivered in Cornell once golden gate reception works from 9-5pm.

It was unique and quaint! The cat is very sweet and friendly. None

Golden Gate front desk has limited hrs (closes @ 5). After hrs, the sister hotel, The Cornell front desk should be picking up phone calls; this failed me twice. And when I went to bkft the last day of my stay, there was no one @ that desk to buzz me in so I left to a nearby cafe. Otherwise it's a nice establishment with charming ambiance in a convenient location for my needs. As nice as the staff are, it needs work.

the decoration was nice!

The location was amazing. The decor was historic and lovely. It felt like we were back in time with all the modern benefits. The neighborhood was fun to walk around in. Breakfast was not the best. The eggs lacked flavor and the ham was cold. There weren't many items. There also wasn't any fruit.

Breakfast was nice. Everyone is very nice. Rooms were clean.

I'm severely allergic to cats and there is an adorable hotel cat, but he ran into my room one morning. The staff was quick to help me get him out since I can't touch cats. The window in my room was street view facing and they don't have blackout curtains. The room was lit up all night with the decorative curtains which made it harder to sleep. I wanted to love this place, but won't stay here again. It's just a little run down, but one thing it does have going for it, is the incredible staff. Everyone was so welcoming, helpful, and kind.

One of the highlights is the free breakfast. Actually hot food. Having a good meal to start the day, in a very expensive city is such a great option. The location is really good because of easy access to transportation. There's good food markets right next to it, affordable eating places, and a Trader Joe's a few blocks away. I could see why I ran into people who told me they go back every trip to San Francisco. I definitely recommend them and will stay there again.

The basement room had to air conditioning.. very stuffy. The basement hall is very dated and carpet looks dirty. Paint chipped everywhere z. The shower I could not stand up in without hitting my head
